Teaching English in Community School
Teaching English in Community School
Project Overview

With the recent improvement in tourism and international trade, the demand of English is very high in Cambodia and the knowledge of English is related to obtaining better jobs and eventually better futures. Many Cambodians in the industrial and town areas are left jobless because of the lack of this language as a consequence of unstable past and years of desolation much of Cambodia's population hasn’t had the opportunity to receive a formal education. These destitute children lack the opportunity of learning English and their dream for secured future is remaining unfulfilled. Though the literacy rate of Cambodia is 86%, they only use

Khmer or Cambodian language in their daily and official use. However, now that peace has been restored, many Cambodians have better access to schooling and the education for girls, as well as boys, is now being encouraged. Many Non-Government Organizations are working in Cambodia and almost all of them require the support of teachers in order to learn and to improve their English.

Asia Horizon offers Teaching English programs to the volunteers, mostly at public schools, orphanages, rural universities and local organizations to improve the employment opportunities of these future generations. The impact you have on the lives of the children you work with will be obvious and long-lasting, and you will also be part of a much wider volunteer network, which is making a really positive contribution to the communities in which we work. Teaching English will not only give the Cambodian people opportunities that they may not normally have, but it will also give the volunteer a taste of Cambodian country and culture.

Volunteer’s Activities
Teaching English in Cambodia is an ideal way to achieve some rewarding volunteer work experience. Usually the volunteers work alongside the English teachers or even lead the classes in improving the pronunciation and conversational skills of the students.

As a volunteer in English teaching project in Cambodia, you will have a lot to offer to the children who go to public/community schools. Volunteers can also help the university students by offering leadership qualities and build their confidence with good English pronunciation and conversation skills. There are also opportunities for volunteers to get involved with teaching other subjects, especially music and dance, since a number of orphanages support themselves by putting on traditional dance shows to generate vital funds. The volunteers can also assist and aid the other teachers in their teaching methods. You will help the younger children to improve their skills and confidence.

Project Skills Required
There is no need of any qualification and teaching experience or a TEFL certificate to volunteer on English Teaching Projects. Volunteers need not necessarily be natives of English-speaking background or countries. This project welcomes any volunteers who the knowledge of English and teaching skills. However you should be above 18 years of age and well familiar with the English language especially with speaking. You can involve in volunteer teaching during your gap year, career break or as part of an extended holiday. Moreover, volunteers should have enthusiasm and passion to share knowledge with different people and culture; they need to be flexible, self-motivated with open minded, learning and unbiased. The main resource you have in teaching English is yourself and you will be armed with a piece of chalk and a blackboard in the classroom.

Arrangement of Food and Accommodation
Asia Horizon makes an appropriate provision for food, room and supervision for its volunteers from the very beginning of their arrival to the country to the end of their project. You will get a brief orientation about the premise and the schedule of the program, living with the Cambodian host family is a great opportunity to understand the Cambodian life, language (especially Khmer), culture, tradition and people. In your volunteering programs, volunteers’ accommodation and food management is provided by a host family and in the placement,  cooks prepare a variety of Cambodian food three meals a day (rice, noodle, drinks, various soups, salad, a main fish dish and a Cambodian dessert). You can also get the food from outside if you wish; there are numbers of affordable restaurants and hotels in Phnom Penh. You can’t expect a luxurious bedroom while staying with the host family. However, volunteers joining Asia Horizon-Thailand’s orphanage program stay with the children in a hostel. Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath with cold water and fan for volunteers in both the host families and hostel accommodations but sometimes they may share the room if the number is large. Volunteers are expected to share same life style while staying with the host family; they may join the daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, washing and so on. Though the local fare will be provided twice a day, you will be really enjoy the way of Cambodian hospitality and generosity to the guest.

Project Location
The orphanages are located in the nearby areas of Phnom Penh city, the distance of half an hour drive by motorbike or taxi from the center. Phnom Penh is a charming, rapidly developing city situated at the convergence of three great rivers: the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac. The town offers many tourist attractions such as the Royal Palace, Wat Phnom, National Museum, majestic temples of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap province, Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, the beautiful coconut beaches of Sihanoukville and is an ideal initial point for daily or weekend trips to the provinces and the beach.

The orphanages in Pursat and Kampot are in the province capitals. Both of these calm and average sized cities are situated by a river that invites the volunteers to enjoy sunset on the riverside. It is a half day trip from Pursat to the temples of Angkor Wat and the Tonle Sap. Kampot is close to the beautiful beaches and islands in the gulf of Thailand. In Pursat and Kampot the local people take pleasure in showing the volunteer around and giving the volunteer an idea of country life in Cambodia. The more volunteers have interest, the more will have the opportunity to discover the country and the culture of Cambodia
