In Cambodia, many children are affected by sexual exploitation, trafficking, and parents are suffering from HIV/AIDS, drug use or mental illness, often in combination with severe poverty. Securing a safe future for the children has become an issue of great concern in Cambodia. These disadvantaged children need attention, love, care, and the opportunity to further their education. Being a child care volunteer in Cambodia, you can make a great difference in the life of over 70 orphans and destitute children who are newly born to 24 years old. The children are provided with food, limited health care, schooling and vocational training.

Asia Horizon is continuously working for the welfare of children in close collaboration with several Cambodian Community organizations. To provide support for the destitute children at Childcare Center in Phnom Penh, we mobilize volunteers to assist orphans and vulnerable children. The Center aims to help these needy and destitute children.

Volunteer’s Activities

As a volunteer in childcare project, you will primarily assist to boost the knowledge, skill and competence of disadvantaged and poor children of the country. By serving the orphans and vulnerable children, you will be offering them a different perspective on life that they can carry into adulthood. You will stay as an elder brother/sister to these children and work alongside the existing staff to care for the children.
English isn't taught until grade 7 in public school, so there are times when you are expected to teach English, help in planning activities or cooking. After the children return from school, you will have to help them with their homework. As a volunteer, you also involve in other creative activities like games, drawings, singing, dancing, painting etc. When you have some extra time, you can also help in the administration activities in the Care center.

Project skills required

No such specific skills and qualifications are required. However, you must be at least 20 years of old. Volunteers joining child care project should have love and passion for serving poor kids. To maintain the physical and mental well being of the children the volunteers are required to sign the 'Code of Conduct' of the orphanage they are placed in. Volunteers should also be flexible, self-motivated with open mind to learn and serve the people of new culture and religion.

Arrangement of Room and Food

Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath with cold water and fan for volunteers in both the host families and hostel accommodations. The volunteer may live with a host family during volunteering. The families are very friendly and hospitable and look forward to learn more about your culture and country. They serve breakfast, Cambodian food for lunch and dinner. Meat is the basis of most Cambodian foods.

Our country coordinator will welcome volunteers at the airport and introduce to the host family and the host organization. You will also have 24/7 access to our contact person and phone number of our coordinator. Moreover, head of the center serves as a local contact person for volunteers. As part of the program our staffs also visit volunteers every two weeks.

Project Location

Child Care Center is located in Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh is a charming, rapidly developing city situated at the convergence of three great rivers: the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac. The town offers many tourist attractions such as the Royal Palace, Wat Phnom, National Museum, majestic temples of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap province, Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, the beautiful coconut beaches of Sihanoukville and is an ideal initial point for daily or weekend trips to the provinces and the beach. The local people take pleasure in showing the volunteer around and giving the volunteer an idea of country life in Cambodia. The more volunteers have the interest, the more they will have the opportunity to discover the country and the culture of Cambodia.
