Many people in rural areas of India do not have access to basic health care facilities, and also lack awareness about health. Many suffer from diseases that could be controlled and cured. Moreover, the doctor-patient ratio is very poor, with one doctor caring for approximately 10,000 patients. Most health care services are urban-centered and no treatments are available in rural areas. There are various efforts from the government of India and non-governmental organizations to provide basic health care for needy people in rural areas.
Asia Horizon cooperates with hospitals and clinics in many rural villages of India. The medical centers in rural areas are understaffed, lack resources and need proficient hands to help the doctors, nurses and medical staff in health centers and hospitals. Many hospitals, in cooperation with local communities, conduct health care programs on basic prevention, nutrition and sanitation. Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist these programs.
Activities as a Volunteer
As a volunteer in a health project, your duties will depend on your qualifications and knowledge. Qualified doctors and nurses can perform full day-to-day treatment of various diseases, counseling and testing and teach patients about first aid and prevention. Medical students work under the supervision of qualified medical personnel.
Project Qualifications
Both student nurses and doctors are welcome in this project. Volunteers will work in local hospitals and clinics. Therefore, they must have proof / certification as a health professional, medical student, doctor or nurse.
Food and Accommodation
Asia Horizon makes appropriate provision for food, room and supervision for its volunteers from the very beginning of their arrival to the country. During the first week of language and cultural immersion program, volunteers stay in Asia Horizon hostel in Gurgaon (Delhi) where cooks prepare a variety of Indian food (Nan, curry, Dal, chapatti, rice and pickle). During their volunteering programs in Delhi, volunteers’ accommodation and food management is provided by a host family. However, volunteers joining ASIA HORIZON-India’s orphanage program stay with the children in a hostel. ASIA HORIZON makes provision of a separate room along with the shower facility in both the host family and hostel accommodation.
Project Location
Our placements are located in Delhi. Delhi is an international metropolis having a perfect amalgamation of New and Old Delhi each presenting appetizingly distinct experiences. Volunteers will explore ancient temples, captivating ancient monuments and magnificent museums. Spacious New Delhi was built as the imperial capital of India by the British and crowd and noisy Old Delhi served as the capital of Islamic India. You can enjoy visiting the dramatic Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Qutub Minar, India Gate, Lotus temple, local bazaars and many more.
