Health Project
Project Overview

Many people in rural areas of India do not have access to basic health care facilities because 75% of health infrastructure, medical manpower and other resources are available at urban area where only 27% of population resides. Large part of rural area is suffering from the different diseases that could be controlled and cured. Thousands of them die daily with very common health problems, the most common health problems in India are diarrhea, amoebiasis, typhoid, hepatitis, pneumonia, reproductive tract infection, worm infestations, meseals, malaria, and tuberculosis. Moreover, the doctor-patient ratio is very poor with one doctor caring for approximately 10,000 patients. Most health care services are urban-centered and no treatments are available in rural areas. There are various efforts from the government of India and non-governmental organizations to provide basic health care for needy people in rural areas but they are still facing several problems such as budget and resource allocation, management of health service, quality of care and so on.

Asia Horizon cooperates with hospitals and clinics in many rural villages of India. The medical centers in rural areas are understaffed, lack resources and need proficient hands to help the doctors, nurses and medical staff in health centers and hospitals. Many hospitals, in cooperation with local communities, conduct health care programs on basic prevention, nutrition and sanitation. Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist these programs.

Activities as a Volunteer
Volunteers in this project aren’t allowed to perform major treatment or surgeries. However, as a volunteer in a health project, your duties will depend on your qualifications and knowledge. Asia Horizon makes an appropriate provision for food, room and supervision for its volunteers from the very beginning of their arrival to the country to the end of their project. During the first week of language and cultural immersion program, volunteers stay in Asia Horizon hostel in Gurgaon (Delhi) where cooks prepare a variety of Indian food three meals a day (Nan, curry, Dal, chapatti, rice and pickle), it may occasionally have chicken, fish or mutton. You can also get the food from outside if you wish; there are numbers of affordable restaurants and hotels in Delhi. During your volunteering programs in Delhi, volunteers’ accommodation and food management is provided by a host family. You can’t expect a luxurious bedroom in the placement. However, volunteers joining Asia Horizon-India’s orphanage program stay with the children in a hostel. Asia Horizon makes provision of a separate room along with the shower facility in both the host family and hostel accommodation but sometimes volunteers may share the room if the number is large. Volunteers are expected to share same life style while staying with the host family; they may join the daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, washing and so on. Though the local fare will provide twice a day, You will be really enjoy the way of Indian hospitality and generosity to the guest.

If you plan to visit a neighboring country such as Nepal and re-enter India, please apply a double/multiple entry Visa.
