 Renovation and Reconstruction Project
Project Overview

Join this unique project and save ancient monasteries, stupas and Buddhist pilgrimage places from falling into ruins. Nepal is a scared land for the Buddhist. It’s the birthplace of Buddha, the founder of the religion, and adherents of the religion have built numerous magnificent monasteries, stupas and pilgrimage places to worship and venerate. Over the years, many have withered as maintaining them is a costly business and Nepal is a poor country.

In the Monastery Renovation Project, volunteers of Asia Horizon will work with our local partner to restore structures that need urgent repairs. The project aims to reconstruct and restore Buddhist stupas (temples) and monasteries. Contribute your labor and feel satisfied for having preserved some of the magnificent ruins. There is no doubt that your contribution will be highly appreciated.

Activities as a Volunteer

As a construction volunteer, you work 4-5 hours a day renovating, painting and gardening Buddhist infrastructures. You will work along side local people and staff members and live with wonderfully warm hearted Buddhist families. If you want to know more about Buddhist rituals and way of life, this is a golden opportunity. You will also have time to travel and discover monasteries and take part in rituals and ceremonies.

Project Skills Required

No specific qualifications are required. However, volunteers joining this project should have strong desire and motivation to work for Buddhist people and to renovate the monasteries, stupas etc. Since the renovation and construction work demands some physical effort and strength, you have to be physically strong and perfect. Besides, a willingness to learn and respect Buddhism and Buddhist culture are highly anticipated.

Project Location

Kathmandu: The city boasts numerous monasteries, stupas and Buddhist monuments. Mostly, they are in dilapidated condition and require urgent repair.

The capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu is also known as the city of temples and historically significant monuments. This is why the small city has more than half a dozen of ancient historical places and heritages which are listed in World Heritage Site. Though small in size, the valley has topographical variation and cultural diversity. Besides this, the climate of the Kathmandu is also mild enough to welcome visitors year round.

Language Orientation and Cultural Immersion

The main objective of our unique language and cultural orientation program is to teach volunteers about local language, culture, religion, and ways of life in fabulous Nepal.

During the program, get orientated into basic language and culture and visit popular tourist sites in Kathmandu like Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu temple, Swoyambhunath, the holiest Buddha temple, Bouddha Stupa, Budhanilakantha etc.

Arrangement of room/food/supervision

Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath for volunteers in both the host families and hostel accommodations. During the first week of language orientation and sight seeing program, Asia Horizon manages you a clean and pleasant hostel having food facility where cooks prepare a variety of Nepali food (Dal, Bhat, Curry, Bread, Pickle, Tea etc). For your convenience, they will make continental and international food as well. You will live with a host family during your placement. They provide local food three times a day. Besides, Nepali people are extremely hospitable, warm and welcoming and volunteers are well respected and behaved wherever they go. Our country coordinator will introduce you to the host family and the host organization. You will also have 24/7 access to our contact person and phone number of our coordinator.
