| Thousand of rural people are dying with the minor health problem; others are living in a critical situation. Asia Horizon offers its Health care project in Nepal to provide basic health service and we ask volunteers to support us in this scared deed.
Project Information
Health is our wealth and also the one of the basic human needs. Nepal is one of the least developed countries in the world where 60% of the people live below poverty level. In the rural area of Nepal, most of the populations remain vulnerable due to poor sanitation, unsafe drinking water and illiteracy where many of them are uneducated about basic hygiene and health care Because of ignorance and lack of awareness they do not have access to basic health care facilities. They suffer from common diseases that could be controlled and eradicated. Some of the most common disease concern in Nepal are malaria, kala-azar, typhoid, tuberculosis, dysentery, HIV AIDS, Hepatitis A, skin disease, respiratory infection. Malnutrition is also the chronic problem, especially in rural area which suffered from food shortage. People in rural area still believe upon supernatural and folk kind of medicine with the assumption of sickness and death often are attributed to ghost, demon and evil spirit or they are the result of evil eye, planetary influences or the displeasures of ancestors. Therefore when an epidemic threatens people go to see a jhakri (medicine man or shaman) and jotishi (Brahman astrologer).
Different government and non-governmental organizations are providing basic healthcare service for the needy people in the rural areas. A major problem with treatment of health is the geography and lack of infrastructure in rural areas which prevents effective allocation of medical staff and medicine throughout the rural areas.
The medical centers in rural areas are resource poor and understaffed and need proficient hands to help the doctors, nurses and medical staff. ASIA HORIZON cooperates with various hospitals and clinics in rural villages with the aim to provide basic health facilities to the rural people who are deprived of such basic health facilities. We always expect volunteers’ accompany with valuable support to those rural and destitute people.
Volunteer’s Activities
Volunteer activities in the health project depend on the volunteer’s certification and knowledge. Qualified doctors and nurses can perform full day-to-day treatment of various diseases in the areas of maternal health, mental health, surgery, laboratories, counseling and testing and provide some education to the people and patients on first aid and prevention. Medical students also can work under the supervision of qualified medical personnel. Volunteers are encouraged to provide health training and seminar on another health related issues like sanitation, health education, hygiene, first aid, reproduction and also they can create health clinic and other temporary health centers to serve them. Many hospitals, in cooperation with local communities, conduct various healthcare programs on basic prevention, nutrition and sanitation and volunteers will have the opportunity to assist these programs.
Project Skills Required
Medical students, nurses and doctors are always welcome in this project. Volunteers work in local hospitals and clinics under the observation of local doctors but they cannot perform major treatment and surgeries. So, you have to submit the proof of qualification as a medical student/doctor/nurse. Furthermore volunteers need to be kind, generous, flexible and interested to help poor and deprived people.
