Assisting in Orphanages
Project Overview

Asia Horizon is continuously working for the welfare of children in close collaboration with several Cambodian Community organizations to provide support for the destitute children at Childcare Centers. As a child care volunteer in Cambodia, you can make a great difference in the life of orphans and destitute children.

Project Information

Working in an orphanage gives you a wonderful opportunity to share your love, skills and energy with poor children. Due to a declining economy and a fragile political situation, the economic condition of Nepal is shrinking day by day. Following a popular uprising in April 2006, the country ended an eleven-year conflict with the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement. This eleven-year conflict has displaced about 300,000 people, leaving many children parentless and has set Nepal's social progress seriously back. Many children lack the opportunity of schooling. It is estimated that there are 127,143 children working in the worst forms of child labor - as bonded laborers, rag pickers, porters, domestic workers, in the carpet sector and being trafficked. As a result they involve themselves in dangerous activities such as crime, drug, prostitution, stealing and abusing.

Various community organizations are active in setting up orphanage centers in Nepal to keep the ever-growing number of orphans and give them a safe and homely environment with an access to education, vocational training and health care. Asia Horizon has established child welfare centers and schools in Chitwan and Kathmandu. Asia Horizon also cooperates with various orphanages and childcare centers in Nepal to improve the lives of some of these most neglected children. We always expect your support to bring a great difference in the lives of these destitute children.

As a substitute to their parents, your support to these vulnerable children will be most precious gift for them. You will assist and teach to orphans and also help to develop creative programs such as art, music, dance, sports, health, hygiene and cooking. Moreover, you are equally motivated to assist the local staff with administration work, care takers, local staffs, assisting a child with extracurricular activities such as singing, dancing and painting.

Project Skills Required

No specific qualification and working experiences are required for the volunteers working with orphans and disabled children in childcare centers. However, the basic requirements are genuine interest and commitment to the Nepalese culture and openness to learn and help disadvantaged children. Kindness, flexibility and learning capacity are also the basic characteristics that volunteers should have. You must be above 18 years of age and should have love and care for the children, committed to work, learning and unbiased because you are the role model to those children.

Working and Safety Issue

Living and working in a poor country is really challenging. It demands courage, some experiences and the ability to adapt. It can be overwhelming to adjust in a completely new environment. The climate, food, and atmosphere – everything is different than your hometown. You will be faced with a harsh social reality every day of your volunteer work and experience things a tourist never sees.

Independence, maturity, flexibility and the desire to do social work are required if you want to take part in the volunteer work program. When we receive your flight information, we will make the necessary arrangements here for your airport pick-up. Generally, volunteers arrive on Sunday. Our country coordinator will be there to welcome you at the airport, to pick up and take you to your accommodation, and you will receive basic orientation about your itinerary and placement along with a comprehensive briefing on the country and specific locale by the coordinator and transfer to the project on the following day or after the one week orientation. The staff/ coordinator will accompany you until you have a sense of complete safety. You are allowed to contact 24/7with an assigned person directed by Asia Horizon during your stay. We will be fulfilling our additional duties such as monitoring, guiding and counseling. Our staff/ coordinator will be there all the time supporting and coordinating you.
