Project Overview

Asia Horizon offers very gratifying and exciting experience in elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka. The aim of this project is the rehabilitation and long-term care of young elephants who have been lost or abandoned by their mothers. The elephant sanctuary project in Sri Lanka has been providing food, shelter and care to many young elephants. Volunteers can have on-hand experience with the baby elephants as they are waiting for your care and support. Volunteers interested in working with elephants are highly encouraged to join this incredible and singular project. Volunteers will work alongside the elephant-handlers and the staffs to care for the elephants. You will be providing necessary support to this project in Kegalle, while helping to improve the treatment and protection of elephants.

Volunteer’s Activities

As a volunteer in elephant orphanage, you will mainly assist the elephant handlers in caring and providing food to the elephants. Your activities involve feeding, cleaning and treating elephants. You may be expected to help in administrative activities and you will have opportunities to do other things around the orphanage available during your stay.

Project skills required

Volunteers working in sanctuary project require no specific skill and qualification. This project is open to any volunteers who are willing to share their time and compassion for the care of elephant. However, you must be at least 18 years old and should have knowledge of English for volunteering.

Arrangement of Food and Accommodation

Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath for you in both the host family and hostel accommodations. During the first week of the language and cultural program, volunteers will stay with a host family in Galle. During your volunteering, you will stay with a host family. Your host family will provide you a shared room with other volunteers, shower, and toilet facilities. Volunteers will be provided local food 3 times a day. Our country coordinator will welcome you and introduce to the host family and the host organization. You will also have 24/7 access to our contact person and phone number of our country coordinator.

Project Location

This unique elephant orphanage project in Sri Lanka is located in Kegalle, a small beautiful town about 85km from Colombo. The orphanage is accessible from Colombo by car, bus or train. Kegalle is one of the most attractive tourist destinations where elephant sanctuary is established. It covers 25 acres of lush forest. Recently the sanctuary has also started an elephant breeding program. During your language and cultural program, you will stay in Galle which is situated near the southern end of the country. Galle boasts a beautiful beach and tourist areas. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. During your free time, you can explore beautiful beaches, monasteries, temples, parks, churches, museums, art galleries while immersing yourself into Sri Lankan typical culture and people.
