Due to 20-year of civil war and the destructive Tsunami of 2004, many children in Sri Lanka have become homeless and parentless. Consequently, they are forced to shelter in an orphanage. Various community organizations are providing them safe and homey environment. Asia Horizon cooperates with local social workers and organizations that support many homeless children and orphans.
Asia Horizon encourages caring volunteers to assist these displaced, maltreated and neglected orphans to lead them a perfect and successful life. Whether playing with the children and stimulating them mentally, every moment you spend with them will contribute to their general happiness and well-being. Volunteers can contribute your invaluable time living with the orphaned children as a part of their family.
Volunteer’s Activities
As an orphanage volunteer in Sri Lanka, you will teach English to the children, help children to stay clean, play with them. You may assist children to make them ready for school and help in administrative activities. Volunteers will have the opportunity to teach English to the children in school as children go to school during the day. You may also help in other creative educational and extra-curricular activities. If volunteers do not wish to teach in school, they can stay taking care of the children who remain in the orphanage. In the evening time, volunteers help children with their homework. You will work 3-4 hours a day for five days of week.
Project Skills Required
There are no specific requirements to join orphanage project. However, you must be at least 18 years old and should have knowledge of spoken English for volunteering. In addition, you should have genuine interest, love and passion for serving poor kids. You should also be flexible, committed to work, open minded and self-motivated to learn and serve to the people of new culture and religion.
Arrangement of Food and Accommodation
Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath for you in both the host family and hostel accommodations. During the first week of the language and cultural program, volunteers will stay with a host family in Galle. Volunteers will be provided local food 3 times a day. In your volunteering period in an orphanage, you will stay either in orphanage hostel or with the host family. Our country coordinator will welcome you and introduce to the host family and the host organization. You will also have 24/7 access to our contact person and phone number of our country coordinator.
Project Location
Asia Horizon projects are located in a prominent city of Galle which is situated near the southern end of the country. Galle boasts a beautiful beach and tourist areas. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. During your free time, you can explore beautiful beaches, monasteries, temples, parks, churches, museums, art galleries while immersing yourself into Sri Lankan typical culture and people.
