English is of great importance in Sri Lanka as English learning opportunities are limited to cities, leaving the rural people without opportunities of English education. The knowledge of English is related to obtaining better jobs and eventually better futures. Asia Horizon has been working with public schools which require the support of English teachers to teach and improve the level of English of the rural and disadvantaged children. The children are keen to learn English from native English speaker. Teaching English is a rewarding job that gives the volunteer a taste of Sri Lankan culture and people. The contribution you make on the lives of the children will be obvious and long-lasting, and you will also be part of a much wider volunteer network leaving positive impacts in the communities.
Volunteer’s Activities
As a volunteer in English teaching project in Sri Lanka, you will have a lot to offer to the children who go to public schools. You will work with our local partner schools and teach English to the children aged between 6 and 16. Usually, the volunteers work along side the English teachers. You will lead the classes in improving the pronunciation and conversational skills of the students. There are also opportunities for volunteers to get involved with teaching other subjects like mathematics, science, literature or physical education. You can also help in administrative works of the school administration. You will teach 20-25 hours per week.
Project Skills Required
Volunteers don't have to be a teacher or to have any formal teaching qualifications to work in our English teaching projects. Whether you want to volunteer teaching during your gap year, career break or as part of an extended holiday, you will have a role to play. The English teaching volunteers need not necessarily be natives of English-speaking background or countries. Experience is not a must but if one possesses, that would be an added asset. Volunteers should have enthusiasm and passion to share knowledge with Sri Lankan children and open to learn Sri Lankan culture and life.
Arrangement of Food and Accommodation
Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath for you in both the host family and hostel accommodations. During the first week of the language and cultural program, volunteers will stay with a host family in Galle. Volunteers will be provided local food 3 times a day. In your volunteering period in school, you will stay with the host family. Our country coordinator will welcome you and introduce to the host family and the host organization. You will also have 24/7 access to our contact person and phone number of our country coordinator.
Project Location
Asia Horizon projects are located in a prominent city of Galle which is situated near the southern end of the country. Galle boasts a beautiful beach and tourist areas. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. During your free time, you can explore beautiful beaches, monasteries, temples, parks, churches, museums, art galleries while immersing yourself into Sri Lankan typical culture and people.
