Teaching English to Buddhist Monks

Project Overview projectMenu

Monasteries or Buddhist temples are the public gathering places where religious and social activities take place. Temple schools have been serving as educational institutions for young monks of Sri Lanka for many centuries. Temple schools function within the social framework of the temples despite the influence of Western education system leading many changes. In this project, you will get an opportunity to gain the experience in teaching and explore traditionally rich Sri Lankan culture and Buddhist religion. We welcome enthusiastic and devoted volunteers to teach English to monks as the temple schools have very limited resources. Your encouragement helps to raise the self-reliance of these humble monks of Sri Lanka.

Volunteer’s Activities

As a volunteer in this project, you will teach English to monks aged between 8 and 21. You may organize games, involve in paintings, drawings, and other creative activities. Apart from teaching English, you can also teach math, computer skills and other extracurricular activities depending on your skills and interest. You will work 25-30 hours a week from Monday to Friday. Volunteers will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the charming and enlightening Buddhist culture and philosophies while serving to the serene monks.

Project Skills Required

There are no specific skill and qualification required to join teaching project in monasteries. However, you must be at least 18 years old and should have knowledge of English for volunteering. Decent clothes must be worn at all times inside temple premises. Other basic requirements are genuine interest and commitment to the Buddhist philosophy of non-violence, respect for the serenity of monks and open to learn and serve in different culture. There are separate temple schools for nuns and monks, so you will be only teaching your specific gender.

Arrangement of Food and Accommodation

Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath for you in both the host family and hostel accommodations. During the first week of the language and cultural program, volunteers will stay with a host family in Galle. During volunteering in temple schools, you will stay with a host family. Your host family will provide you a shared room with other volunteers, shower, and toilet facilities. Volunteers will be provided local food 3 times a day. Our country coordinator will welcome you and introduce to the host family and the host organization. You will also have 24/7 access to our contact person and phone number of our country coordinator.

Project Location

Asia Horizon projects are located in a prominent city of Galle which is situated near the southern end of the country. Galle boasts a beautiful beach and tourist areas. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions. During your free time, you can explore beautiful beaches, monasteries, temples, parks, churches, museums, art galleries while immersing yourself into Sri Lankan typical culture and people.
