Monasteries (The Wats or Buddhist temples) are the public gathering places where religious and social activities take place. Monasteries have served as educational institutions for young citizens of Thailand for many centuries. Wat schools still function within the social context of the temples despite the influence of western education system leading many changes. There are about 30,000 temples in Thailand where monks live and perform their religious study. To run the monasteries they receive donations. Some monasteries also support social welfare activities, including running a school within the temple complex, for the assistance of the local communities.
Volunteer’s Activities
The volunteers in this project will teach English to primary and lower secondary school students from Mondays to Fridays. The volunteers working in monasteries get an opportunity to gain the experience in teaching and understand Thai culture/Buddhist religion.
Project Skills Required
No specific qualification is needed for the volunteers teaching English in monasteries. The basic requirement you need is genuine interest and commitment to the Thai culture. You should also be open to learn and serve primary and lower secondary school students.
Arrangement of Food and Accommodation
Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath for volunteers in both the host families and hostel accommodations. The volunteer will live with a host family during volunteering. They provide Thai food three times a day and rice is the basic food. The families are very friendly and hospitable and look forward to learn more about the volunteer's culture and country. Our country coordinator will welcome the volunteer at the airport and introduce him/her to the host family and the host organization. Volunteer will also have 24/7 access to our contact person and phone number of our coordinator.
