Teaching English in Primary Schools
Project Overview

Vietnam has state-controlled network of education system. However, there exists a number of mixed public and private schools is also increasing. Courses are mainly taught in Vietnamese. A large number of public school has been organized across cities, towns and villages with the purpose of raising national literacy rate. Education from age 6 to 11 is free and compulsory in Vietnam. Primary school children start learning English at grade 5. English is one of the favorite subjects for the children but they have very limited chances of learning and interacting with foreigners.

This project is designed to help the primary level children to learn English. Public schools in Vietnam have limited resource and understaffed. Therefore, volunteers’ participation in teaching may improve this degrading situation in education. Volunteers get teaching materials and Vietnamese teaching colleagues will act as supervisor.

Volunteer’s Activities

As a volunteer of teaching English project in Vietnam, you can contribute in teaching English to children. Volunteers help the students to improve their pronunciation, listening and speaking skills to improve the general English skills of the children as well as the teachers. You will help the children with their day-to-day activities such as doing homework, making notes, exchanging cultural views; teach them about health and hygiene, organize games and outdoor activities. You will get teaching material to teach children who are often from poor families.

Project Skills Required

No specific qualification is required for the volunteers teaching English in primary schools. The basic requirement you need is genuine interest and commitment to the Vietnamese culture and being open to teach and serve the children who are eager to learn from you.

Arrangement of Food and Accommodation

Asia Horizon arranges a separate room along with a communal bath for volunteers in both the host families and hostel accommodations. The volunteer may live with a host family during volunteering. The families are very friendly and hospitable and look forward to learn more about the volunteer's culture and country. They provide local food three times a day. Our country coordinator will welcome the volunteer at the airport and introduce him/her to the host family and the host organization. Volunteers will also have 24/7 access to our contact person and phone number of our coordinator.

Project Location

Placements of our primary school volunteers are located in Hanoi. Hanoi, a city between the rivers, built from lowland, has many scenic lakes and sometime is called "city of lakes”. As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered the cultural centre of Vietnam, where every dynasty has left behind their imprint. The city has many interesting cultural and historic monuments for visitors. With the rapid growth of population, an abundance of shopping centers has been built in Hanoi.
